Spain

Spain is absolutely one of my favourite countries.  In my mind it has it all: beach, mountains for skiing, variety of culture, great art and architecture, fantastic food, great weather.  I’ve been several times, on holiday, travelling and to learn Spanish. I look forward to my next visit – whenever that will be.

When: In 1992 for the Expo in Seville, In 1992 with a friend and her family, In 1999 for 5 weeks with a friend, in 2001 for 4 weeks to learn Spanish

Where: Menorca, Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Malaga, Cordoba, Granada, Cadiz

Who: with friends and alone

How: I’ve flown in and out of the country, to get around I’ve taken trains, buses and hire cars. All are easy, though trains and buses can get booked in advance in peak summer time.

Weather: Hot and sunny in the summer months, particularly in the south where temperatures can reach into 40 degrees C. cooler in the winter.

Food: Tapas (small snacks traditionally taken with wine) can be light bites or full meals, the wine is excellent, paella, fresh sea food

Sights: Madrid: Prado museum, Modern art museum, Barcelona: the Sagrada Familia (Gaudi’s unfinished gothic cathedral), art nouveau architecture, Parc Guel, Figures: the Dali museum, Cordoba: the great mosque, Granada: the Alhambra (wonderful moorish palace), Seville: cathedral

Surprises: the men don’t pester you like they do in Italy

Tips: book accommodation in advance in the summer to save time
