Laos

I went here for Chinese New Year not long ago.  As we were travelling with T. we kept it simple and went only to one place rather than dashing around trying to see it all.  It was a lovely place to visit and a great holiday. Very relaxing. Friendly people, warm weather, lots to see and do and all very manageable and small.

When:  January 2011 for 1 week

Where: Luang Prabang

Who: with A, T. and a friend

How: We flew to Luang Prabang via Bangkok. We used Air Asia HK – Bangkok and Lao Airlines from Bangkok to Luang Prabang. We had to stay overnight in Bangkok on the way out, but it was easy.

Weather: Warm and sunny, though cooler at night and in the early morning – a jumper was needed.

Food: Wonderful, fresh and full of herbs.  The typical dishes include fried river weed with spicy dip (tastes better than it sounds), rice, curries

Sights & Activities: the temples around Luang Prabang, up-river trip to see and ride on elephants, river cruise, I had a go at stencil making which I really enjoyed, the market is wonderful for clothes and souvenires

I loved: that people were so friendly

Surprises: how much the Lao men made a fuss of T. (I expect it with women), they simply all went silly over her!

Tips: Stay at the Lotus Villa Hotel.  Small, lovely rooms, gorgeous small central garden with delicious breakfast (western and Laotian)
