Vietnam

Considering how close it is to Hong Kong it’s surprising that I’ve only been twice.  This is a country I would like to explore more and take time getting to know. I’ve been only to the two extreme ends of north and south. I’ve found the people to be friendly and there is a thriving art culture which is always of interest to me.

When: November 2003, Easter 2012

Where: 2003 – Hanoi & Halong Bay, 2012 – Ho Chi Minh City

Who: 2003 – with a girlfriend, 2012 with A & T

How: flew in and out to Hanoi and HCMC respectively. In 2003 we got around my mototaxi (great fun).

Weather: varies greatly from north to south. The south has a tropical climate – hot and humid most of the year. The south has sub-tropical so gets cool in the winter. Typhoons can be crazy in the spring/summer months.

Food: yummy! fresh! fabulous noodles, fresh spring rolls

Sights: Hanoi: Temple of Learning, walking around Old Hanoi, Ha Long Bay (stunning), Ho Chi Minh City: War Remnants Museum, Fine Arts museum, Botanical Gardens

Surprises: couldn’t quite get a handle on Ho Chi Minh City, felt like we only just scratched the surface.

Tips: If you are with young children I recommend staying here: The Somerset serviced apartments. We had a huge 2 bed flat, hotel room service, pool, play room, swings – just brilliant for T.
