The powerhouse of Europe packed with culture (and bad fashion)! I haven’t seen much, but what I have seen I have enjoyed!

When: Inter-railing in July 1995, with A on our Hong Kong to London trip in 2005.

Where: Cologne and Berlin

Who: a uni friend in 1995 and A in 2005

How: In and out by train each time.

Weather: Pretty nice for the summer in northern Europe. Warm and sunny.

Food:  fabulous wines

Sights:  Cologne Cathedral, Berlin Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie (truly fascinating and sad), what remains of the Berlin wall.

Surprises:  rocking night life in Berlin (the metro runs all night at weekends)

Tips: Allow lots of time – there is so much to see and do
